“Printable Material” Does Not Mean Every Surface Needs No Preparation
The same material can have different coatings, additives and surface energy. Test the exact product blank before committing to a large production batch.

Direct-to-Object Printing and Transfer Decals Solve Different Jobs

Phone cases, acrylic awards, wooden signs, metal plates and packaging samples create different size, height, fixture and adhesion requirements. Build a list of the products you plan to sell and record the largest width, length and thickness. This is more useful than choosing a printer only because it is described as A4 or A3.
2. Separate Print Area from Product Height
The flatbed area controls the maximum footprint and how many items fit in one batch. Product height controls whether the item can physically pass under the printhead. An A5 printer may cover a phone case but not a thick gift box. An A4 printer with up to 130 mm height can support thicker products even though the bed is smaller than A3.
3. Choose White Ink and Varnish around the Finish You Sell
White ink is needed for dark, transparent and colored products. Varnish adds gloss, highlights and tactile texture. Entry A5 and A4 configurations focus on CMYK and white, while A3 and A2 configurations add varnish options. Raised effects require multiple layers and reduce effective production speed.
4. Match the Printhead to Real Production Demand
L800 fits compact entry systems. DX7 supports an A3 production direction. XP600 spans dedicated phone-case equipment, single-head A3 systems and dual-head A3/A2 machines. Dual heads can improve commercial production capability, but they also increase the need for disciplined maintenance, ink management and regular operation.
5. Plan Fixtures, Suction and Batch Loading
Small loose products need accurate fixtures or templates. Flat boards benefit from a suction platform. Repeat phone-case or product batches benefit from consistent positioning, while a rolling tray can support a more continuous loading rhythm. Fixture design directly affects registration accuracy and operator speed.
6. Test Adhesion on the Exact Product Blank
“Acrylic,” “metal” or “phone case” is not one universal surface. Different manufacturers use different coatings, additives and release agents. Clean and test the exact blank, evaluate primer when necessary and confirm scratch, tape and cleaning resistance before offering the product commercially.
7. Include Maintenance, Environment and Idle-Time Planning
UV printers need nozzle checks, capping and wiper cleaning, white-ink circulation, suitable temperature and humidity and a clear procedure for idle periods. A printer that runs regularly with correct maintenance is safer than an oversized system that sits unused for long periods.
8. Confirm Final Configuration and Included Package
Before ordering, confirm print area, print height, exact printhead configuration, ink channels, RIP software, voltage, included fixtures, UV cooling, spare parts and shipping package. Product names can cover several configurations, so the quotation should define the exact machine being supplied.
What size DTF printer should a beginner buy?
A4 is the most compact entry point for testing a DTF business and producing smaller graphics. A3 is usually more flexible for standard T-shirt artwork and growing daily orders. Choose based on artwork width, available workspace and expected order volume rather than machine price alone.
Is A4 or A3 better for a small DTF business?
A4 works well for limited space, logos and occasional orders. A3 provides more layout room, supports standard apparel graphics more comfortably and usually gives a small business more room to grow. For a serious daily-order business, A3 is generally the more flexible format.
When should I choose an A1 DTF printer?
Choose an A1 or 620 mm DTF printer when you need gang-sheet production, wider roll media, transfer sales or regular commercial output. A1 equipment also needs more working space and is commonly paired with a powder shaker and curing system.
What is the difference between single-head and dual-head DTF printers?
Single-head printers are commonly used in entry and smaller commercial workflows. Dual-head printers separate or accelerate color and white-ink output, making them more suitable for higher daily volume. Dual-head equipment also requires a more disciplined maintenance routine and supporting workflow.
Which DTF printhead is better: XP600, I1600 or I3200?
XP600 is a practical commercial entry point and appears in both A3 and A1 formats. I1600 is positioned as a balanced commercial upgrade for proven demand. I3200 is intended for stronger production pressure and a more industrial output direction. The right choice depends on volume, budget and maintenance capability.
Do I need a powder shaker?
A powder shaker is not essential for occasional A4 or A3 production because powder can be applied and cured manually. It becomes increasingly valuable when order volume grows because it automates powder application, excess-powder recovery and curing in a roll workflow.
Can a DTF printer print on cotton and polyester?
DTF transfers can be applied to cotton, polyester, blended fabrics, denim, nylon, canvas and other compatible materials. The final result depends on the film, adhesive powder, heat-press settings and the material being decorated.
What consumables are required for DTF printing?
A standard DTF workflow uses CMYK and white DTF ink, PET transfer film, hot-melt adhesive powder and cleaning materials. You also need a heat press, and depending on production volume, an oven or powder-shaking and curing system.
How much workspace does a DTF printer need?
A4 and A3 desktop printers need space for the machine, film handling, powdering or curing and a heat press. A1 systems require significantly more floor space for roll feeding, a powder shaker, curing, ventilation and safe operator access. Plan the complete workflow rather than only the printer dimensions.
Can you provide a complete DTF production package?
Yes. A complete package can include the printer, powder shaker or curing oven, heat press, air-purification equipment, RIP software, ink, film, powder, cleaning supplies and common spare parts. The package should be configured around printing width, output target, voltage and destination country.
