Gildan Brands tackles skills shortage in apparel

Following a pilot project that proved successful earlier in the year, Gildan Brands officially launched its first Nationally Accredited Printing course. This was in collaboration with TAFE NSW.

This new course, which will start in February 2023, is designed for practical and theoretical skills needed to print on apparel. It will be offered through both online and face-to-face learning.

“This new course is designed to open the door for many aspiring individuals who want to join the industry – gaining invaluable expertise in basic design/file preparation, traditional screen printing and digital direct to garment,” Gildan Brands Australia GM David Hillen said.

“Apparel decorating roles are in demand across Australia, and for many, it’s hard to find a course that teaches both the right skills in both digital and traditional screen-printing.”

As a first qualification, the course can be used to gain a number of certificate III specialist qualifications in the printing and graphic arts field. This course is for people who are looking to work in print or related industries or just starting out.

This course is nationally recognized and includes 12 competencies. It equips students with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to perform a variety of tasks.

“Collaborating with Gildan Brands has provided a golden opportunity for individuals to upskill and get a qualification in an industry that is continually growing and evolving,” he said.

“The printing industry in Australia is worth $8 billion, and over 4,500 printing businesses are in operation. However, technology is driving digital advancements in our industry too at a rapid pace.”

Hillen said that the shift to digital print from traditional means that there is an increasing need for innovative thinking and adaptable printers.

“Screen-Printing is a process that can print on almost anything and has become an in-demand skill across Australia,” Hillen said.

“We are excited to be working with TAFE NSW to provide students with a newly accredited printing course that will ensure they stay at the forefront of printing innovation.”

Gildan Brands, in collaboration with TAFE NSW has been developing and building the next stage for the Gildan Printing Academy. This will provide new learning and job opportunities throughout the country, it stated.
