Landmarks Illinois seeks nominations for the 2023 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois

CHICAGO, Ill., Dec. 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Landmarks Illinois Accepting nominations for the 2023 Most Endangered Historic Places award Illinois. Our longest-running advocacy program, the Most Endangered List is designed to highlight historic and culturally important sites in the state that are at risk of destruction, demolition, or inappropriate development. Online nominations are invited for the 2023 Most Endangered List. January 17, 2023.

Courthouse Preservation Partnership members pose in front of Joliet’s Will County Courthouse. It is a 2022 Most Extinct site. Landmarks Illinois continues its collaboration with local advocates in order to obtain a permit for the courthouse to be reused.

Anybody, including residents, community groups, and city officials can submit a nomination to a site. Illinois To be added to the 2023 Most Endangered List. Nominated sites should be in dire need of preservation. They don’t have to be nationally or locally designated landmarks, but they should be appreciated by the local community and/or celebrated for their local history or culture.

The Landmarks Illinois staff, board of directors will review all nominations to the 2023 Most Endangered species list. Landmarks Illinois Nominations for places that are able to tell the stories and histories of communities that have not been given equal attention by the preservation community are especially welcome. In early spring, the nominators will be notified if their chosen place has been selected. In 2023, the Most Endangered List will be published. May 2023.

BENEFITS OF THE ‘MOST ENDANGERED DESIGNATION
Landmarks Illinois’ Most Endangered Historic Places list includes sites Illinois Residents, governing bodies, media outlets and the media often pay greater attention to endangered sites, which helps boost advocacy efforts for its preservation. A site’s inclusion on the Most Endangered lists can lead to legislative efforts to aid its eventual preservation.

Landmarks Illinois staff will continue to support preservation efforts of properties that are on the Most Endangered list. This includes continuing communication and relationships and resources (including small grants) as well as connections. This has often resulted in decades-long relationships between Landmarks Illinois and local advocates. Landmarks Illinois staff can also be a link to other preservation professionals like engineers, architects, historians, and others.
